The Application of Bottle-Shaped Plastic Containers in Food Packaging
Bottle-shaped plastic containers are distinctive and creative packaging solutions widely used in the food industry, categorized into two types: original baby feeding bottles and imitation bottle-style creative packaging. Featuring rounded, non-slip grips, secure sealing designs, and food-grade safe materials, these containers combine functionality with visual appeal, making them popular across various food segments such as maternal and infant nutrition, new-style tea beverages, dairy products, and snack foods. Leveraging their unique shape, they create differentiated brand selling points that align with current trends in children's consumption, nostalgia-driven preferences, and social media-driven shopping behaviors, leading to increasingly broad applications in the food packaging market.
Food safety and material performance form the core foundation for the use of bottle-shaped plastic containers. All materials must comply with China’s GB 4806.7 standard for food contact materials, ensuring BPA-free and contamination-free properties. Based on usage scenarios, materials fall into two main categories: single-use and reusable, catering to diverse storage and consumption needs. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the dominant choice for commercial creative packaging due to its high transparency, lightweight nature, low cost, and ease of mass production. It clearly showcases the appearance and texture of beverages and snacks, performs well under ambient and refrigerated conditions, and effectively preserves the flavor of juices, milk teas, and fermented drinks. However, it has poor heat resistance—cannot withstand temperatures above 70°C—and is not microwave-safe, typically intended for one-time use. PET is commonly used for 50–500ml viral beverages and children’s snack packaging.
PP (polypropylene) is the most versatile material, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 110°C, allowing brief disinfection via boiling water or steam. Durable, impact-resistant, and cost-effective, PP bottles offer excellent value. Some matte semi-transparent PP bottles also provide light-blocking benefits, helping preserve the quality of dairy and fermented beverages by preventing photo-oxidation. Available in thin-walled disposable and thick-walled reusable forms, PP is suitable for bulk packaging of room-temperature yogurt and fresh milk, as well as for creating reusable containers for infant complementary foods and powdered milk. Tritan, a premium material, offers glass-like clarity, contains no bisphenol derivatives, and excels in heat and impact resistance, combining superior safety with elegant aesthetics. It is primarily used in high-end children’s beverages, trendy adult tea drinks, and gift-boxed desserts, significantly enhancing product premium positioning. PPSU (polyphenylsulfone), while offering the best performance with high heat resistance and repeated sterilization capability, is costly and reserved mainly for original infant feeding bottles, rarely used in general food packaging.
Maternal and infant food represents the most essential and core application area for bottle-shaped plastic containers. In infant feeding, standardized PP and PPSU plastic bottles serve as dedicated containers for formula and breast milk storage, precisely designed to match infants’ drinking habits. Equipped with anti-colic structures, they help reduce spitting up and gas issues. Clear measurement markings allow parents to accurately control feeding amounts. Miniature small-capacity bottles are widely used for liquid supplements, fruit purees, probiotic milk, and ready-to-drink breakfast milks. Combined with sealed silicone nipples, they enable direct sipping without additional utensils, offering exceptional portability and suitability for both home and on-the-go use. Additionally, compact bottle-shaped containers can be used for portioning children’s snacks like soft puffs, cream puffs, and milk tablets. The nipple-style closure prevents spillage, while the smooth, rounded body allows easy gripping by young children, ensuring both safety and practicality.
New-style tea beverages and adult liquid drinks represent innovative applications of this packaging format, leveraging nostalgic design to create viral consumer trends. Brands utilize “bottle-shaped” designs to evoke childhood memories, focusing on nostalgia marketing and targeting younger consumers from the post-90s and post-00s generations. Numerous viral milk teas, fruit-flavored milk drinks, and fermented beverages on the market adopt large-capacity transparent PET bottles imitating traditional baby bottles, paired with direct-drinking silicone nipples. Their novel and distinctive appearance naturally encourages social media sharing and photo-taking, driving strong virality on short-video platforms and social networks, thereby boosting sales and brand recognition. In addition, this bottle design is also suitable for packaging fermented milk, flavored yogurt, and bottled desserts. Distinguished from traditional bottle shapes, it offers exceptional visual recognition.
Overall, the baby-bottle-shaped plastic bottles break away from the single-functionality of conventional food packaging by integrating safety, practicality, aesthetic appeal, and marketing effectiveness. Building on material safety, they meet the high safety standards required for maternal and infant products while catering to the creative marketing needs of mainstream beverages. Thanks to their differentiated advantages, these bottles have firmly established themselves in the food packaging market. As food consumption trends toward greater personalization and refinement, the application scenarios for baby-bottle-shaped plastic bottles will continue to expand, positioning them as a distinctive food packaging solution that combines both practical value and market potential.
